A Time Traveler’s Look at: Dramatic Ramesseum Papyrus

As a cartoonist, I’ve always been fascinated by how people throughout history have told stories through images. Recently, I came across the Dramatic Ramesseum Papyrus – a scroll over 3,900 years old – and it completely captivated me. I’m amazed at how simply yet effectively the ancient Egyptians conveyed a story without speech bubbles, using only visual elements and symbolism. Imagine this: Pharaoh Rameses II appears multiple times on the same scroll, each scene like its own mini “panel.” While it may not seem like a comic at first, in its own way, it reminds me of one.
